Imaginarius summons local, national and international artists

Portugal/s largest International Street Theatre Festival country – Imaginarius – will once again give a leading role, in its 20th edition, from 28 to 31 May, to local, national and international artists, through the Call for Support to Local Creation and Mais Imaginarius – Artistic Creation Competition. Applications for project presentations run from 16 September to 31 October.

Santa Maria da Feira’s City Council, as promoter of Imaginarius – International Street Theatre Festival, and within the scope of the Call to Support for Local Creation, continues to value and involve local cultural and creative agents in this major project, challenging associations , local companies and independent artists, born or residing in the municipality, to present new artistic creations to integrate the programme of the 20th edition of Imaginarius, thus providing an exclusive call for local cultural and creative agents.

The projects to be presented should be original creations in the field of theatre, dance, music, circus, performance, installation, digital art, urban and multidisciplinary art, and focused on the interaction with public, within the Framework of the theme of the 2020 edition, “The Myth”.

Under this call, four creations will be supported, preferably two projects from associations and two other projects from local companies and/or independent artists. Each of these artistic creations will receive a grant of 4,000 euros to support their creation, development, production, travel expenses and presentation at the 2020 Imaginarius.

The management of Imaginarius will evaluate the proposals based on their originality, interaction with the audience/public space, the multidisciplinary character of the artistic collectives, inclusion of accessibility support strategies and tools, local community involvement and circulation capacity in domestic and international dissemination routes.

Mais Imaginarius is an international competition that challenges emerging Portuguese and international artists to present their artistic projects for public space at Imaginarius – International Street Theatre Festival of Santa Maria da Feira.

The diversity, quantity and quality of the projects that have been submitted to the Mais Imaginarius competition over the last few years show the willingness of artists to occupy the public space of Santa Maria da Feira and to express themselves through multiple languages – theatre, dance, music, circus, performance, installation, digital art, urban and multidisciplinary art – and a large number of participants, as well as high quality applications, are expected for this year.

The 20 selected projects will be in competition at the 20th edition of the Imaginarius Festival and will be evaluated by a jury made up of elements of national and international reputation from academic, artistic and cultural institutions. All selected participants will receive a grant for travel expenses, food, accommodation, technical support and dissemination of their projects on the festival networks, as well as the possibility to participate and present their work at Imaginarius PRO, a marketplace for programmers and artistic directors.

The winners of this International Competition will receive a cash prize of 5,000 euros to support their creation in artist residency, to be premiered at the 2021 edition of Imaginarius.

Applications for the Call to Support for Local Creation and Mais Imaginarius must be submitted between 16 September and 31 October.

The results of both Calls to Support for Local Creation and Mais Imaginarius will be released by 30 November 2019.
