The tradition of castells, the human towers of Catalonia, is here reinvented as a collective game and a contemporary gesture. Xics del Xurrac transforms an ancestral practice of balance, courage and cooperation into a participatory experience shaped by wood, hands and shared decisions. There are no passive spectators, only people invited to enter, experiment, take risks and support one another.
Born in a carpentry workshop, this unlikely collective builds human towers without human bodies. The material is wood, yet the logic is profoundly human. Each piece demands attention, listening, a sense of group and mutual responsibility. To climb is to trust, falling is part of the process, starting again is inevitable. The square becomes a place of informal learning and active togetherness. The public comes and goes, observes, participates, builds and dismantles. The experience does not close into a single moment, it unfolds over time, creating an ephemeral community organised around the simple gesture of building together.
Xics del Xurrac affirms that the future of public space lies in the activation of collective knowledge, the sharing of responsibility and the valuing of balance between strength and care. A serious game in which play is also a way of learning how to be with others.
